September's Simple Pleasures

2018

Last year, Autumn made itself visible several weeks early. Leaves began to change color by mid August and by mid September they were already falling.

I always smile when I see the pretty Autumn colors all over the ground and I love it when leaves are falling as I drive by rows of deciduous trees with my windows down. This scene gives out a feeling that one would get from a loved ones hug. In my case this would be God giving me a hug. I do thank Him for all that is pretty and so thankful that we do have beautiful things in this world to enjoy especially during those difficult times that we all go through from time to time. It is a reprieve from the hard times and beautiful scenery gives us hope, hope for better days to come ... and they will ... in time.

Seeing a cloudy sky never gets old for me and if it's a moody sky then it is even more worthy to photograph.

I took a picture of this poem from one of Riley's books called The Children's Book of Virtues. Isn't it good? I think I may print it and frame it.

Typically it doesn't rain hard in WA, it's usually a steady light rain or drizzle but on occasion we do get a lot of rain and it reminds me of the torrential rains we would get during the monsoon season in Tucson. We even had thunder! That's another rarity. Whenever it does rain hard we step out on the front porch and watch it for a while.

I sometimes plan little outings for myself during the day. Sometimes I'll treat myself to breakfast. I bring a book with me, I read while I eat. I just love solitude! Other times like in this case I went to our local country store and bought several size and color pumpkins then I drove to Redondo beach and sat on a bench and read, looking up occasionally to take in the views. It was enjoyable and quite relaxing.

This is how the sky looked like as I was getting closer to home ... a big difference from the cloudless sky out by the water. I think this is one of the reasons why I can handle cloudy days ... because of the variety in the weather. Everything is all about balance, and perspective. And not to mention that I do have a great affection for cloudy stormy skies.

This boy has always been so active and very hands on and always wants to be doing something. As you can imagine, after a while it can be tiring and mentally draining. On days when we want to relax at home during the evenings we have him play board games. I'm so grateful that Jacob likes to play board games too. I like to sit with Riley while he's reading and help him with difficult words and to remind him to pause at commas and stop at periods or else everything sounds like a run on sentence, lol.
We do tell him that it's perfectly ok to be bored. There's times when we say no tv or electronics and that he needs to entertain himself without making a mess. At first he'll complain but then I remind him of how blessed he is to have toys and books. After a few minutes the house is quiet and when I checked on him he's immersed with his hot wheel cars or playing with his army men. I think it's important that he learns to keep himself busy in constructive play.

And ohmygoodness, just look at my super cute Sophie! Isn't if funny how cats will make themselves feel right at home next to books? Like, it happens every time. I didn't put her in front of my books she just likes to sit by them or on top of them, like when I'm reading or the ones on my desk. I can't even with cats ... they can be the cutest! Some cats that is. I'm just so thankful that Sophie lets us pick her up whenever we want. She's very loving.

Still, with the remainder of the apples from apple picking, Jacob baked an apple banana bread with pecan crumble. It was so moist and delicious.

One of my favorite breakfast is hash brown casserole, eggs, bacon and biscuits and gravy. Sometimes we even add this meal on our dinner menu.

Another book stack. All great books by biblical authors. I am SO thankful God opened my eyes to discern between biblical and unbiblical authors. I no longer just buy a Christian book just because the book is placed in the Christian/religion genre. Although I hold biblically sound authors in high regard not one of them replaces the truth that can only be found in Scripture.

During mid mornings I take time to do Bible study. Reading slow and with intention has been engrossing. The more you learn God's truth the more you want to keep learning and the more fun it becomes.

Sometimes after dinner we head out by the water and breathe some fresh air. I think it's nice to be out in nature especially after a long day. It is refreshing and necessary and it definitely breaks up the monotony. It is up to us to make our life interesting and fun ... you have to be intentional.

Such a pretty serene scene.

On August 31st, 2018 my sister texted me and said that my dad wasn't feeling well. He felt a heaviness on his chest so my sister took him to the ER. They ran tests and dad ended up staying overnight for observation. Doctor's concluded that even though my dad did not have the typical symptoms of a heart attack they determined that he did in fact had a mild one and had 100% blockage so the Doctor placed two stints in his left artery.
I am just so thankful that my sister was available and took him to the ER immediately. I spoke with dad the day after his surgery and said he was doing better and sounded in good spirits. I'm grateful to God for allowing dad to stay with us a while longer.

Mom was blessed to have another birthday last September. My sister got her the prettiest cake. Here is dad after his surgery. He lost weight but looks good. I wish I could have been there but grateful that my sister includes me by texting me pictures of important celebrations. I'm happy she's there ... always being a helping hand to them.

Living slower requires living with intention. And to live with
intention means to make little daily choices that resonate deeply in our souls.

Independence Day 2014

Knowing that Coronado gets super crowded on the 4th, we left my parents at 5:00 am. In order to get parking along the beach you need to get there before 6:00 am. We first stopped at a taco shop for breakfast burritos.

We're usually freezing when we get to Coronado very early in the morning. The marine layer typically burns off between 1:00 to 3:00 pm but this time it burned off by like 10:30 am. We weren't cold at all.

Grandpa and Riley ... just walking. My mom didn't come with us. She's really not into spending the entire day at the beach.

Eating our breakfast burritos. We all got machaca burritos. So good!

Busy walking back and forth from the water. We don't like to set our things too close to the water. First because we don't want to have to move once it's high tide and second because everyone else likes to be close to the water and I really don't like to have people so close to our little camp.

Since it wasn't cold I changed him into his patriotic swimming trunks.

We also saw dolphins, several of them.

It's always the sweetest thing to see when older brother is taking care of baby brother. Nathan helped us out a lot with Riley on this vacation. Definitely much appreciated.

Good thing I remembered to put sunblock all over Riley's exposed skin.

My dad wanted to go see the parade so him and I went. Jacob stayed with Riley and the kids at the beach. My sister had left to get us coffee. I was wearing a cardigan but after standing in the sun for about half an hour I got hot so I took it off. Well, I forgot that I didn't have sunblock on my arms and so I got super sunburned especially on my right arm. It hurt SO bad for about five days. I'm still peeling.

The parade was fun. This was my most favorite float. A re-enactment of the flag raisers on Iwo Jima.

When we got back I found Riley asleep. Poor thing was cold. He was curled up in a fetal position. Jacob covered him up. He slept a little over an hour.

And of course, Geico is everywhere. Jacob's been so blessed to have the job that he has but he's also worked SO hard to be where he is today.

As soon as he woke up from his nap he was at it again. No stopping this kid from playing in the sand.

Guess what?! I caught grandpa giving Riley a bite of a snickers bar and Riley didn't hesitate either. He took a big old bite.

We had s'mores while he had a marshmallow.

An impromptu picture of us. I actually love it!

Although there are public restrooms on the beach I really avoid using them because by noon they are usually filthy. I really don't care to walk on a peed on floor ... even with shoes on so we made the ten minute walk to the Hotel Del to use their facilities. Now that's much more like it. We know this hotel like the back of our hand. My dad worked here. I worked here. Jacob worked here ... and this is where we met.

He always gives me a silly face when I ask for a picture. That's why I'm really not a big fan of staged pictures.

One of Sydna's friends from Tucson now lives in San Diego so she called her up and had her hang out with us at the beach. I'm glad that she still keeps in touch with her closest friends. They had a good time together.

At around 7:00 pm we began to load the truck and we made our way to the fireworks site. You can't see them from the beach side. You need to go to the front of the Hotel Del  or the towers ... or to even get a better view you need to go to the golf course or by the swimming pool where the barge is in the bay.

I happened to look back as we were walking and I noticed how pretty the sky looked. Had to take a picture.

We didn't feel like walking across the street from the Del so we sat right in front of it on the lawn. We were tired and sunburned. It was a bit muggy and I was sticky and that always but always grosses me out. I do not handle humidity well at all. Besides, Riley was tired too that's why we decided that this spot would be a good enough spot to watch the fireworks from.
Riley enjoyed them. As a small child they are easy to please. But if I'm not mistaken these fireworks aren't as good as they used to be from several years ago. They used to last half an hour now they last twenty minutes. They used to have a lot more big loud fireworks and now those big ones were very few. It's fun to be in Coronado on the 4th of July during the day but now I'm having second thoughts about coming back for their fireworks show. The ones across the bay at Seaport Village looked like they put on a better show. Maybe this tradition has come to an end and it does make me sad because I've been coming to Coronado since I was a little girl and now with my own husband and kids.
Maybe now that we live in Washington we need to reconsider where to spend the 4th at. Upon researching I've come across a beach in Oregon that has a great firework show for the 4th. Maybe we need to start a new tradition and stay closer to home. We shall see.

All in all it was a great day. I had a good time at the beach with Jacob and the kids, with my dad and sister. The kids had a great time. My sister was a great help and that sure kept me from stressing out too much. She was even kind enough to take Sydna's friend to her house.

Throwback Thursday ...

2.14.13

On Valentine's Day AND it's my dads birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!
This really isn't a great picture of us but all my photo albums are still in boxes and I only had but a few pictures saved on my external hardrive of my dad so this will have to do.

This picture was taken back in March 1999 on Sydna's 2nd birthday. Such a long time ago. Back when I used to wear red lipstick. Jacob happens to like when I wear red lipstick ... me, not so much anymore and I haven't worn any in years.

My dad is very strong in character and a stern man. Now that he's a grandfather he's softened up quite a bit and sometimes when I'm disciplining my own kids he'll catch my attention and will tell me to cut them some slack. Grandparents are such pushovers aren't they? I guess we all become pushovers once we become grandparents.

My dad loves to watch movies ... especially war/military movies. He also has great passion for oldies. He can listen to oldies all day long. Sometimes when I'm changing the station in my truck and I happen to stumble upon an oldies station I begin to sing along. I really don't know many by name but if you put one on I'm bound to know the entire song by heart. Then I become melancholy and I start missing my dad.

Although my dad doesn't show his affection easily that doesn't mean I love him any less. In a way I am so much like my dad. I love to watch movies {not war ones though} and I like listening to music {I don't necessarily listen to oldies}. I like to be around family but we prefer solitude most of the time. I can say that I got my impatience from him. Not a good trait to have but I got it nontheless and if that's the only bad thing I got from him then it's really not that bad.

Sometimes ... there's no reason for words. I know him and I know what he likes and what makes him happy.

I hope you had a great day dad. We love you and miss you a lot!
